Thank you to everyone for your support and kind words for me during my Release Day yesterday! I’m anxiously waiting Friday, where we can get together and celebrate! We will have a fun backdrop for pictures and props, refreshments, giveaways, and book signing.
Last night, I was interviewed for a podcast, and while you will have to check back in a couple weeks to hear the interview, one of the questions Linda Fulkerson asked got me thinking about how important it is for new writers to have support and help as they write their first book. I got to talk a little bit about my role as a Developmental Editor last night, and I am going to start blogging more about this type of editing and why it is beneficial for any writer, no matter how many books they have published.
On today’s “To Do List” is assembling all of my center pieces for my Launch Party, but before I go do that, I wanted to share this week’s Wisdom Wednesday. Let’s see what wisdom Laura is giving us today.
Name: Laura V. Hilton
Genre: Contempoary Amish romance
Latest Novel: Love By the Numbers
Writing Tip:
Put a button by your computer – it stands for Put your butt on a chair and write.
Haha, I love it! Sometimes it’s hard to sit down and make yourself write. For me, I stay at home with my youngest son, so my office is in my house and it’s hard to not let myself get distracted when I need to be writing.
Favorite Writing Tip for New Writers:
Read. A lot. Join a critique group. Develop thick skin.
I love it when other authors remind us to read. I feel like sometimes we get caught up in writing, that we push that to the side, but it’s so very important. You have to read to continue to grow.
Developing thick skin is also important. Not everyone is going to love your genre that you write, or the story that you write and that’s okay! Critique groups are here to help you learn, so listen with an open heart. This is not always easy to do, but we must keep at it and keep learning.
After her fiancé dies in a buggy accident, Lydia Hershberger is invited to Jamesport to manage her Mennonite aunt’s gift store while her aunt and uncle are on a mission trip. While there, Lydia gets acquainted with her aentie’s best friend, Bethel Bontrager, and her grown son, Caleb. Lydia is surprised to find herself drawn to handsome clockmaker, Caleb Bontrager. But in spite of an instant flame of attraction between them, he doesn’t seem interested. In fact, pesky Caleb treats her like he doesn’t even like her.
Bright and sparkly. That’s Caleb’s first impression of Lydia. He’s always been attracted to sparkly things. In fact, his affinity for those things, and the trouble they can cause, are exactly why he’s determined to change his ways and settle down. With Lydia’s aentie gone, he is handling the books for the gift shop and is forced to spend too much time in her presence.
When God offers Lydia a second chance at love and family, will she take it? Or will the secret Caleb harbors cause her even more heartbreak?
